Space Traveler Reveals Depression After Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
