Much like the recent storm tore through the north-west the previous evening, City swept the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This outcome signalled back-to-back Women's Super League defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the top team with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle league and European football with a limited squad has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the UCL. Considering the calendar, it always appeared this was the period that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the memorable win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had tried to make changes with a handful of alterations. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no similar loading worries. Jeglertz made one change from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since returning from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

The trouble started to build for the United boss and his team from the kickoff. This was a show of the quality from Manchester City whose potent offense played with and tore United open with a superb opening period performance that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts completely dominant and saw the visitors disorganized. Prior to this match, the away side had allowed just six in this league campaign but they fell apart in the wake of Manchester City's creative prowess.

Early Chances

The omens came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Hemp was at the heart of everything in the beginning, using the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her crosses were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had several attacks ahead, their long-ball tactic giving them choices in the wide areas but they could not trouble Yamashita. City, meanwhile, commanded the ball, taunting their opposition and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the back post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's 7th goal from a cross of the campaign.

They extended their cushion with another pair of goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the middle from defense, the field widened for City. The influential Casparij received possession on the wing before delivering a accurate ground pass for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a quick turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the opportunity to drive a shot home from range.

Second Half

The primary change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the upright, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to register a single shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any team who finished above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a commanding position after nine games.
